How do I motivate myself when I do not feel motivated? This question was posed to me today. This question arises for everyone at some point or another, be prepared! If you read the last installment then you know about how goals motivate people to ride. Now we can go into a day where you have a goal but still cannot bring yourself to face the task.
First I will assume that the person is not
over-stressed physically. Assuming that it
is just motivation then it is time to move on to what
do you do. Let's go through a mini goal setting
day. Start the workout! Put aside any
specific tasks that you have and clip into those
pedals! Give yourself a gold star you have just
completed the hardest step, starting. Ride
without any pressure to go a specific pace, time,
distance or whatever you use to gauge a
workout. If you feel bad and it gets worse go
home, some days nothing works but you still have that
star. If you didn't turn back read on.
Now that you have done the hard work(starting), let's go back to the planned workout. To be the best cyclist you can be you have to work hard. How will that happen? Possible answer:random events. Let's say that you had sprints to do that day 3x150 meters 1x200 meters 1x250 meters. A dog chases you for a short distance. Tadahh! You just finished one. Another gold star for you! Only two more and the short ones will be done. Use the past successes to lead you.(started AND did one sprint, two gold stars) Keep it up!
If that doesn't work look at some other part of the ride to succeed at. I like time or distance. Complete that which you can do! Ride 20 miles or go for one hour. Pick something and do that. Another gold star! See wasn't that easy!
Finish the workout knowing that you did the best that you could with what you had. Look forward to making improvements in the next workout.
